Warrenpoint Return for Waverley

The historic paddle steamer Waverley is set to return to Warrenpoint this May, following the success of the inaugural public cruise sailing from Warrenpoint last year.

This year, due to demand there will be two sailings from Warrenpoint. The first, an evening cruise from Warrenpoint on Tuesday 28th May, sailing at 7pm and returning at 10pm will see Waverley sail down Carlingford Lough and out to Kilkeel Bay.

The second cruise which will be linked to Newry Maritime Association will take place on Wednesday 29th May. This will see an extended cruise down Carlingford Lough and along the coast to Dundrum Bay giving views of St John’s Point. This cruise will depart Warrenpoint at 11am and return at 3:30pm.

David Holmes, CEO Warrenpoint Harbour Authority said, “We are delighted to welcome Waverley and her crew back to Warrenpoint. This was a hugely popular event last year, with fantastic weather and a brilliant atmosphere on board. By adding an extra event this year, a ‘Light on the Lough Cruise’ with Newry Maritime Association, we are hoping that even more local people and visitors will get the opportunity to get on board.

“Last year Waverley added an extra boost locally, with people eating and staying in the town before and after the sailing. There was entertainment in the local bars and restaurants as an extension of the Blues on the Bay Festival, so we plan to work with the local business community to build on that, this year.”

This year marks the 50th Anniversary since Waverley was gifted for £1 to the Paddle Steamer Preservation Society. This season will see Waverley visiting up to 70 ports and piers including Warrenpoint. Further information about the cruises and associated events can be found on Warrenpoint Port or Waverley’s social media and local press.
